A power supply comes in various sizes, capabilities, input and output connections and power ratings. Common features for electronic power supplies include fan cooling, internal heat sinking, some form of overcurrent protection, perhaps some power factor correction, a few remote controls, and short circuit protection and of course input and output cabling with appropriate connectors for power transfer. Smaller simple units plugging in directly to a home or office 120 VAC wall socket usually consist only of a transformer, a rectifier to convert AC to DC, and a long cord carrying the DC voltage to the equipment for power delivery. Some AC/DC power adapters come with many choices. They include ATX, Cabinet, Desktop Usage, Module, Open Frame, PCB Mounting, Rack Mounting, and Wall Mounting. The DC output power is the output power of the supply. Some power supplies can also have an AC output voltage as well as AC output frequency different from the standard 60 hertz we are normally familiar with. Apparent power is the product of the RMS current and the RMS voltage of the AC output, hence it is identical to the VA rating. VA equals the product of Volts times Amps, or average watts. AC/DC power adapters will accept AC input voltage when plugged directly into an electrical wall box outlet and transform that 120 VAC voltage into a lower DV voltage. DC – DC converters accept DC voltage input and provide a regulated DC output voltage for computers, many types of telecommunications equipment, and a variety of control applications. Common applications for power supplies include telecommunications, computers, various types of instrumentation, lasers, military, plasma, testing equipment and many other devices too numerous to list here.
